That being said, that didn't stop them from greenlighting some absolutely bizarre projects, such as making a second Zone of the Enders 2 remaster with VR support, which I'm sure they had to have known was ultra-niche but they did it anyway. They aren't all-in on mobile, they're all-in on microtransactions, which is a major source of revenue for them, and has been since the early 2010s before they even axed Kojima. Konami posted record profits just a couple years ago and a large portion of that came from their AAA games (translation: their sports games, mostly PES). (I would love to be proven wrong though and see SH2 and SH3 on GOG)

  • No one has ever refuted the claim the SH2/3 actors never were given written agreements to sign, in fact Jeremy Blaustein has even confirmed the agreements they had with the actors were verbal only, problem is, verbal contracts rarely, if ever, hold up legally (sounds like they maybe only had a contract with the agency that hired the actors but we've never seen proof of that either).
  • Even if the actors rejected, if Konami had fully owned the rights they could have still reused the performances instead of spending money to rerecord them.
  • If Konami "Fully owned the rights to the performances" they never would have needed to send letters asking for permission and to sign a new agreement.

I'm not here to debate if they were right to claim owed dues, because here's the facts Now could Konami re-release the PC versions with the new recordings patched in? a) I doubt they would give a dev team the time and budget (an ex-hijinx dev came out saying the new voices weren't recorded to match the original timing and animations of the original cutscenes, so they has to do extra work to shrink/stretch the audio tracks, which is partly why they were so out of sync and off sounding) b) I would hope Konami knows that would be a PR Disaster, the new recordings are quite disliked for changing or misrepresenting the characters, random line and delivery changes and phoned in, anime style voice work c) Honestly I wouldn't be shocked if Konami also didn't back up the new recordings

So the fact that audio files from the PC/PS2 versions weren't ripped to replace any missing VO from the original releases for HDC, the obvious explanation was they weren't missing, they just weren't allowed to. (It's possible there could have been issues with asking permission for Douglas Cartland's VO, as the actor has past away). It's far more likely it was legal issues, considering Heather Morris (voice of Heather Mason) was never even contacted by Konami, presumably after Guy Cihi brought up legal issues and Konami had no intention of negotiating with the actors they didn't even bother.

In Matt McMuscles' "What Happened?" video he claims sources said the original studio recordings were lost (unfortunately he doesn't provide a source so I'm not sure where he got his from)Įven ignoring that, the original "Technical and Logistical" explanation never made sense, why couldn't the audio files just be ripped from the PC version or PS2 version, this is something fans have been doing for years?

Then SH3HD has no original voices at all, Tomm Hulett at the time claimed it was "technical and logistical reasons" and "not a legal issue" but has refused to ever clarify. The problem is, even after some of the SH2 and SH3 cast did sign their rights away retroactively, there are original performances missing from SH2HD, 2 examples being the elevator game show host and the doctor from a hospital flashback, if Konami owned the rights why are these performances replaced? So to flashback to HDC, if you remember the reason why Guy Cihi and other SH2/SH3 cast members were considering suing Konami was because they had been sent letters asking for permission to reuse their performances and none of the actors had been asked when they were reused for the PC/Xbox versions. (Just the fact SH4 is the one they re-released, probably the least popular of the original 4, instead of starting with 2 or 3 points to it being the only one they could re-release) To be blunt, I don't see any way the original SH2 and SH3 can be rereleased.
